Prelude Ventures, a San Francisco-based ClimateTech venture fund with >$1.0B of AUM, seeks to engage a part-time Chief Financial Officer / VP of Finance who will bring leadership, managerial expertise, and analytical rigor to the financial management and general operations that support the firm’s continued growth.  This will be an independent contractor role reporting to the Managing Directors.  The individual will be responsible for all aspects of the firm’s financial operations, including strategic financial planning, portfolio valuation, financial reporting, investor reporting, accounting, and tax.

  • Lead the finance function for Prelude Ventures (the “management company”) including the strategic and operational components of finance and serve as a key thought partner to the Managing Directors. 

  • Lead the finance and operational functions for the various funds, including compliance, tax, accounting, and reporting.

  • Manage relationships with other external parties, including Carta, auditors and tax professionals, and banking relationships.

  • Apply best practices around investment valuation and private fund accounting. Oversee preparation of private fund portfolio company valuations for new investment analyses and quarterly and annual financial statements. Manage capital calls and distributions, K1s, annual audits and taxes.

  • In partnership with other firm leaders, assist with limited partner relationships and investor meetings.

  • Evolve the technology and reporting systems of the management company.

  • Lead portfolio company financial reporting review.


The ideal individual will bring finance leadership experience within a similarly sized venture capital, private equity, or other alternative investment management firm. Candidates must be highly collaborative, bring strong communication skills, and demonstrate unassailable ethics and integrity.



  • Experience working as a CFO or other senior finance professional within a private equity, venture capital, or other investment management firm

  • Ability to develop strong relationships with a wide variety of audiences, including limited partners and Portfolio Company CEOs and CFOs.

  • Ability to work effectively in a small team and in a nimble, entrepreneurial environment.

  • 10-20+ years of total professional experience.

  • Demonstrated analytical, accounting/financial, and communication skills.
