Why we invested
Steel production is one of the largest, most important industries on the planet. It is also one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Boston Metal is creating a steel production process that not only has the ability to make zero-carbon steel, but will also reduce the cost of steel production, while allowing for more modular, local production.
Why this work matters
Steel is the most important engineering material in the world. The roughly 2 billion tons of steel produced annually contribute nearly 10% of global carbon emissions. The steel industry needs a scalable solution to reach net zero on the timeline society is demanding. Boston Metal is commercializing a technology called Molten Oxide Electrolysis that replaces fossil fuels with renewable electricity to convert iron ore into green steel through a cost-efficient, scalable process.
